Udupi, Sep 21: “When we have interest and dedication, it is possible to overcome any obstacle and reach the peak of success,” said artiste Remona Evette Pereira, who entered the Golden Book of World Records by performing Bharatanatyam for 170 hours.
She was speaking on Sunday as the chief guest at the Girls’ Day Celebration organised by the Women’s Commission and women’s organizations at Thottam St Ann’s Church.
Remona Evette Pereira inaugurated the programme and, in her address, she said “Every person has special talents, and when parents and society encourage them, it inspires them to achieve. While girls strive to accomplish difficult feats, it is natural for society to give both encouragement and criticism. But without worrying too much about criticism, if one moves forward with the sole aim of achievement, success is guaranteed. In today’s competitive society, parents should not impose their own desires on children, but rather encourage them to pursue the field in which they have genuine interest. If so, one day they will certainly shine with remarkable achievements,” she said.

Presiding over the programme, Denis D’Sa, parish priest, said “A woman is not weak but empowered, and this has already been proven through her achievements. Through the "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, special encouragement is being given to girls in our country, and this opportunity must be utilized. Compared to the past, today women have advanced in every field. There are ample opportunities for women in this nation, and by making use of them, they must grow to greater heights.”
On behalf of the church, artiste Remona Evette Pereira was honoured and Leslie Aroza, vice president of the church’s parish council, conveyed best wishes for the event.
At the event, prizes were distributed to the winners of the speech competition organized by Catholic Sabha, Udupi region. The church’s girls presented various cultural programs including dance and short plays showcasing the role and status of women in society.
The event witnessed the presence of Sister Sushma, superior of the local convent; Blessilla Crasta, secretary of the Parish Council; Vanitha Fernandes, coordinator of 20 commissions; Gladys Pereira (mother of Remona Pereira), Sharlin Fernandes and Anora Fernandes representing the girls, and Agnel D’Souza from the church.
Priya Rodrigues welcomed the gathering, and Shanti Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
