Know the signs: Busting myths on Alzheimer’s for early care

Faridabad, Sep 21: Every World Alzheimer’s Day highlights a painful truth: myths about dementia still delay care for millions. Many families dismiss memory lapses as “just old age,” or assume Alzheimer’s can’t strike before the 70s. Experts warn that such beliefs cost precious years of treatment and planning.

Dr Vinit Banga, director & HOD of Neurology at Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, shares key misconceptions:

• Forgetfulness is not always normal ageing: Persistent trouble with daily tasks, losing words, disorientation or personality shifts signal more than ageing. India’s Longitudinal Aging Study estimates 7.4% of Indians over 60—about 8.8 million people—have dementia, often undiagnosed.
• Alzheimer’s isn’t only for the very old: Early-onset cases can appear in the 40s or 50s, making timely diagnosis crucial for family and financial planning.
• “No cure, so why bother early?” is harmful: Early treatment, lifestyle changes and support can slow decline and improve quality of life.
• Dementia isn’t always Alzheimer’s: Vascular, Lewy body and frontotemporal dementias require different management. Correct diagnosis matters.
• Diagnosis isn’t the end: Medication, cognitive therapy, and lifestyle measures help preserve independence and dignity.

Dr Banga stresses that early detection allows effective management, participation in drug trials, legal and financial planning, and reduced long-term care costs.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, the message is clear: recognising warning signs and seeking medical advice early offers the most valuable gift—time and choice.
