Panaji, Sep 21: With drugs creeping into educational campuses, parents in Goa are expressing growing concern over the safety of students in schools and colleges. Many worry that institutions meant to educate and empower are increasingly becoming avenues for exposure to illicit substances.
“While it’s tough to monitor every action of children, schools and colleges must have robust awareness programmes to educate students about the dangers of drugs. Parents too should stay informed about their children’s social lives—not to control, but to support them,” said a concerned parent.
Instances of drugs being offered to students have alarmed many. One parent recalled a village school where unidentified individuals were reportedly seen giving e-cigarettes and drug-laced chocolates to students for free. “Two classmates were caught with e-cigarettes, offering them to others. With support from teachers and classmates, our child helped uncover the real culprit,” the parent recounted.
Parents highlighted the vulnerability of adolescents, noting that children from affluent families are often targeted due to easy access to money. “Teenagers don’t always know the consequences of their choices. Constant support and dialogue between parents and children are vital to prevent them from falling prey to addiction,” said another parent.
An engineer father expressed his fears, comparing present-day challenges with his own school days: “Goa is not what it was when we studied. Students today face immense academic pressure, and some may seek escape in harmful habits like smoking or alcohol. We need to stay vigilant to protect our kids.”
Parents stressed that early intervention is key, drawing lessons from the youth addiction crisis in Western countries. “Drug addiction can devastate the lives of children and bring unimaginable grief to families. College authorities and parents must spend quality time with students, making them aware of the risks. Even small support can help combat this growing campus menace,” urged one parent.
The consensus among parents is clear: awareness, vigilance, and open communication are crucial to safeguarding Goa’s youth from the lure of illegal substances.
