Imphal, Sep 21: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba has lodged a police complaint against an X user for a “malicious” post linking him to the deadly ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday. Two soldiers were killed when unidentified terrorists opened fire in Nambol Sabal Leikai.
The MP’s personal secretary said the post, by an account named Shalini Shukla, carried Leishemba’s photo with an inflammatory caption implying his ties to the banned Arambai Tenggol group. Police sources suspect the account may be an impersonation.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level security meeting at Raj Bhavan to review the situation and ordered intensified patrolling, stronger intelligence gathering and coordinated action among agencies. He later visited the Assam Rifles Garrison in Imphal’s Mantripukhri to pay homage to the fallen soldiers, Nb Sub Shyam Gurung and Rfn Ranjit Singh Kashyap.
The attack drew widespread condemnation across Manipur. Residents in Churachandpur held candlelight vigils, while armed forces veterans organized prayer meetings in Imphal, Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong and Kanglatombi.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Police detained two suspects and recovered a Maruti van believed to have been used in the ambush. Investigation is underway to trace all links to the attack.
Insurgent groups Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United Peoples Front (UPF), both signatories to the Suspension of Operations pact, alleged that valley-based insurgent groups were behind the assault. The Imphal-based Meitei Leepun also condemned the strike and expressed solidarity with the armed forces.
