Chamoli, Sep 21: In a heart-rending scene from disaster-hit Chamoli district, a 38-year-old woman was found dead with her 10-year-old twin sons clinging to her body, after a cloudburst triggered landslides and flash floods on Wednesday night. Her husband Kunwar Singh was miraculously rescued alive 16 hours after the calamity.
The tragedy unfolded in Nandanagar locality where eight people went missing following heavy rains and debris flow. Search and rescue operations by the NDRF, SDRF and local administration continue, with relief camps set up for displaced families. Officials confirmed extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.

On the second day of relief work, a temporary Bailey bridge was installed on the Dehradun–Mussoorie Highway to restore connectivity. The incident comes just a week after a devastating cloudburst in Dehradun’s Sahastradhara that claimed at least 13 lives and damaged roads, homes and bridges, including the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected areas, confirming that around 35 houses were damaged, 20 people injured and 14 still missing in Chamoli. “All rescue teams are on the spot. The injured are being treated, and those critical are being shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh. Road repairs are underway and all districts remain on alert until the monsoon ends,” Dhami said.
