Margao, Sep 19: Traditional fishing communities in South Goa have demanded that the sopo fee collection at the wholesale fish market be handed over to local societies, arguing that this would ensure better upkeep and safeguard local interests.
The demand was raised during a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by SGPDA chairman Krishna Salkar earlier this week. Fishermen leaders said that the current structure unfairly burdens small-scale locals while favouring inter-state traders.

“We want the tender for sopo to be allotted to local fishing societies. This market was built with Goan fishermen in mind,” said Savio D’Silva, chairman of Cutbona Fisheries Society.
Fishermen also opposed the proposed fee hike, calling it unsustainable for smaller catches. They sought exemptions or reduced lump-sum payments and demanded separate dedicated spaces for Goan fishermen, with priority for local sales.
Salkar assured the fishermen that he would discuss the issue with PDA members and local MLAs Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai before consulting the chief minister.
