Mangaluru, Sept 17: In a swift operation, Kankanady Town police have arrested three men in connection with the theft of a cross Jersey cow from a house in Tajipodi, Adyar, and successfully recovered the animal alive before it could be slaughtered.

The incident occurred in the early hours of September 13, when a cow was stolen from the courtyard of Umesh Alva’s residence in Adyar. A case was immediately registered at Kankanady Town police station under Crime No. 144/2025, invoking Section 303(2) of the Indian Penal Code.

Based on credible leads, police traced the cow and detained three individuals: Shabaj Ahmad, son of Mohammad Naushad, resident of Ganadabettu House, Adyar, Kannur, Mangaluru; Mohammad Suhan, son of Sulaiman, who lives near Yashasvi Hall, Arkula, Valachil, Mangaluru; and Khader Mohammad, alias Koli Monakka, son of Abdul Khader, residing near Jumma Masjid, Adyar, Mangaluru.

Investigations revealed that Shabaj and Suhan stole the cow and sold it to Khader Mohammad, who allegedly intended to slaughter it for meat. The cow was found alive in a shed adjoining Khader’s residence, where preparations for slaughter were reportedly underway.

A senior police official said, “Acting on intelligence, our team was able to prevent the slaughter and rescue the cow safely. Legal action has been initiated against all involved.”

Further inquiries uncovered that the accused have prior criminal records. Shabaj Ahmad is a habitual offender with one murder case, two attempted murder cases, and a robbery case registered against him at Mangaluru Rural and Kankanady Town police stations.

Mohammad Suhan has a case under the NDPS Act registered at Ullal police station, while Khader Mohammad was previously booked in a cow slaughter case in 2024 at Mangaluru Rural police station.

In view of the attempted illegal slaughter, authorities have seized the shed where the animal was being held, under provisions of the Karnataka Prevention and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. Police confirmed that legal proceedings are underway to confiscate the property for government acquisition.

The timely intervention by Kankanady police has drawn appreciation from local residents, particularly as illegal cattle trafficking and slaughter remain sensitive issues in the region.
