Mangaluru: Trial run of traffic signals causes congestion in city

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 16: A trial run of traffic signals at Balmatta, Ambedkar Circle, and Bunts Hostel Junction on Monday morning led to heavy traffic congestion during peak hours, causing inconvenience to the public. Realizing the situation, traffic police turned off the signals and restored normal traffic flow.

As part of the experiment, newly installed traffic signals under the Smart City project were activated at three major junctions. However, the move created long queues of vehicles and disrupted smooth movement. The trial run, conducted for two hours, highlighted the difficulties, prompting police to study the issue further for better management.

Manual regulation despite signals

The sudden operation of signals caused confusion among commuters, with several failing to follow the new rules. To address the situation, police staff were deployed on-site, requesting motorists to comply. Controlling the growing traffic density during the trial became a challenge for the police as well.

Multiple signals on the same stretch

Motorists entering the city from Pumpwell faced multiple signal points along the road at Karanth Circle, Balmata, Ambedkar Circle, Hampankatta, Bunts Hostel, and PVS. This resulted in delays for those heading towards State Bank and Lalbagh, with travel time from Pumpwell to the city taking over 15 minutes.

Short duration adds to woes

The road from Pumpwell to Karanth Circle is already in poor condition, hindering smooth traffic. At Karanth Circle, the 20-second signal cycle further delayed movement, especially for vehicles arriving from Kasargod, Puttur, Ullal, Mudipu, and Bantwal. With buses occupying most of the space, cars and smaller vehicles were left struggling to pass.

Assessment of challenges

“The signals were operated on a trial basis on September 15 morning to assess the challenges. We studied both the pros and cons and will hold discussions with senior officials. Another trial will be conducted in the coming days, and once the problems are addressed, the system will be fully implemented,” said ACP (Traffic) Nazma Farooqi.

How can the signals will work when every five hundred meters there is a cross road and again in that same five meter stretch may be five or six high rise building exits are located. All the building exits are located just perpendicular to the main roads because building are constructed adjacent to main roads . No slip roads at all for smooth joining with main roads. Many places instead of parallel parking authorities have allowed angular or perpendicular parking at the main road sides. With this type of situation even Japan technology may face difficult to workout. Day by day vehicles are increasing and so traffic jams.

It is not so easy to control traffic in such a small city like Mangalore. But not impossible. Here the public is babituated with sick signal operations. If the signals are working and driver sets his mind accordingly, then suddenly signals disappear. I strongly suggest the traffic department to engage all local tv and radio medium and give proper information about the traffic signal operations, any road detours, and information about traffic congestion. The radio information was there few years ago, but I don't know now . However, keep the signals continuously operational at any cost so that the drivers will set their mind which road must be taken. Or what time they reach to their destination with signal operations. I always see the cops are ready with challan book at the heart of most of the junctions like kankanady, bendorwell, highlands. But no one is interested in avoiding or catching the vehicles which are passing in wrong side. Please do something for these issues.

Day by day Jumbo cars are increasing. They dont follow traffic rules. Even parking their big vehicles on many important roads are disgraceful. They occupy more roadspace. leading to traffic congestion. During festivals the traffic police need not experiment such trial runs.

How ignorent we are. The first traffic signal was installed in mangalore DECADES ago. As every other made in India product they did not last. Later different officers made different arrangements. This is the latest episode. Awareness has to be created among road users. Prior intimation has to be given thru advertisements. Traffic to be managed manually along with the signals. Our top officers are the best. Without road markings, lane markings, traffic signs it may not work well. Busses, trucks, small vehicles and two wheelers must know their lanes. I am very happy traffic lights finally came. We can genuinely proud of our city.

Private bus mafia will dislike the traffic lights, because all their true colour will be out when lights are on. The private bus mafia controls all traffic management in the district. Police are just puppets.

Better late than never. Wonder how many days these signals will function without technical glitches AND how many people will be apprehended for breaking signals .. which is a disgrace and a virus in our country.

Problem is nobody in India is literate in traffic regulations. As per Indian logic even if the signal is red & junction is clear they need not stop. In other countries jumping red signal is a criminal offence.

signals are needed in Mangaluru as well as following rows instead of trying to get in all free spaces in every side and speed limit has to be maintained. cc cameras need to be fixed to identify the rule violators and fine need to be imposed; In many counteries people follow rules but in our country we overtake rule. That is why so many accidents take place. Poor traffic police have to stand whole day in the burning sun to guide the traffic.

Good to know that new traffic signals are getting installed in Mangalore and many more cities in our State. This new system is proven in Japan and now it's getting into our Country. State. This is a joint collaboration at large by two countries, technology transfer agreements. Having said this, now we the commuters has to re-set our though process and get aligned to this new system. Agreed during trail run there will be lot of congestion and traffic jams. The fruitful results are yet to come in, let us be patient and reap the fruit in the longer run. Traffic management is the key for development at the same time we as citizens ought to follow traffic rules and regulations for a smooth and hassle-free drive.
