Palwal, Sep 16: In a shocking case of alleged drunk driving, a Haryana police head constable was arrested after his speeding car mowed down three young brothers walking home from school in Palwal on Monday, killing two of them on the spot.

The victims, Ayaan (13) and Ahsan (9), died immediately, while their youngest brother Arjaan (7) was critically injured and has been referred to Rohtak for treatment.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohinder Singh said the accused, Head Constable Narender Kumar, posted in Mewat, was driving at very high speed when his Hyundai Exter hit the children around 1.30 pm. “A medical examination will confirm if he was drunk. The vehicle has been seized and Narender is in custody,” Singh added, assuring full support to the grieving family.

Locals alleged that Narender was intoxicated and attempted to flee after the accident. Residents chased him for about 500 metres before catching him. Videos circulating online show the accused arguing with enraged locals.

Shahabuddin, father of the victims, said his sons were walking home when the speeding car struck them. “He didn’t even stop and threatened us saying he is a cop,” the distraught father said.

The tragedy comes just days after a senior government officer was killed in a rash driving incident in Delhi, intensifying concerns over reckless driving and accountability among law enforcers.
