Mangaluru: Woman killed after falling into pothole, run over by truck in Kulur; NHAI officer booked

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 9: A tragic accident at Kulur on Tuesday September 9, claimed the life of a private hospital worker, Madhavi, after her scooter hit a large pothole on the road.

According to eyewitnesses, Madhavi lost control of her scooter due to the pothole, fell onto the road, and was run over by a passing fish-laden truck, leading to her spot death.

Local residents expressed anger over the negligence of authorities, pointing out that several potholes stretch along the highway from Mulki to Pumpwell. They alleged that officials act only when fatalities occur, ignoring repeated appeals for road repair.

Residents warned that if urgent measures are not taken, more lives could be lost due to the dangerous condition of the roads.

NHAI officer, truck driver booked

A case has been registered at Mangaluru North traffic police station under Crime No 224/2025, Sections 281, 106(1) BNS and 198(A) of the IMV Act against the officer of the National Highways Authority for negligence in failing to maintain the highway properly and not closing potholes, which led to the accident, as well as against the lorry driver for negligent driving. Investigation has been undertaken.

There is none of us that doesn't know of a person or a loved one who was lost in a road accident? Yet, the majority of use (including me) are silent spectators for all these years. We have heavy rains which do cause pot holes. But poor construction, heavy traffic and the vehicles on the road make pot holes deeper. Knowing all of this why is there no percentage of the money held back as warranty or an emergency budget to fix the potholes on the roads? We choose the wrong leaders, and after elections defend our leaders on the cost of the lives of your loved ones. It is an open secret how contractors work? How contracts are awarded? and how contractors get paid? Yet we choose to blame the pot holes and do very little to fix the burning issues plaguing our society.

We, the people of Mangalore, are deeply troubled by the current situation in our city. Instead of focusing on unity and development, we are witnessing increasing division, political infighting, and religious conflicts. Innocent lives are being lost, and the spirit of peace that once defined Mangalore is fading. Because of this unrest, many people of Manga Naadu are choosing to migrate away from Mangalore in search of safety and a peaceful life. This is a tragic reality that should not be ignored. We appeal to all leaders, authorities, and citizens to rise above narrow differences and work together for the growth, harmony, and prosperity of our beloved city.

It is heart breaking to learn about yet another life gone. What will it take for the Authorities to realize that precious, young lives are lost, just because of someone's negligence towards duty. Why are the authorities so lethargic and still in deep slumber regarding road repair? These are all main roads, this is national High Way, other one is airport road - what a shame to see and travel by these roads?

If roads are well maintained with proper traffic lanes and Camera monitoring system and hefty penalty on violators. On the contrary the potholes and waterfilled mini ponds add to the misery. Life is valuable and two wheelers are a mode of transportation for an ordinary office goers or students. Simply by blaming we cannot solve the issues. Due action is only the answer.

We citizens are already paying in every possible way—road tax at RTO when we buy a vehicle, toll tax on highways and bridges, heavy central excise duty, state VAT and road cess on every litre of petrol and diesel, GST on vehicles, tyres and spare parts, property tax to the city corporation, a share of our income tax which funds national highways and infrastructure, and additional cesses like the fuel/infrastructure cess, Swachh Bharat cess, and others. With so many taxes and cesses squeezed out of us in the name of development, why are we still forced to drive on pothole-ridden death traps? Any politician, official, or contractor who has eaten even a single rupee of this public money without doing their duty does not just carry corruption—they carry blood on their hands. Madhavi’s death is their direct responsibility.

Our people only know to to brag about how great a nation we are, but in reality we are a laughing stock. NHAI is supposed to taken care of the upkeep of this road, but they are not bothered at all. See the stretch in nanthoor which has been dug up and there is no footpath for pedestrians altough there is enough space for constructing two more lanes. I am really sad for the family of the unfortunate lady and may her soul rest in peace while I curse the people who take bribes and let such accidents happen because of their carelessness.

My heart breaks that Madhavi’s life was lost to corruption and negligence. Every tear of her family questions corrupt politicians, careless officials, and greedy contractors. My tax is drowned in blood instead of safe roads. And if we give or take bribes, we too share the guilt—are we not part of Madhavi’s death? A strong revolution is the only answer before more lives are buried on our roads.
