Tirunelveli, Sep 3: S Nagarajan, who secured All India Rank 1 in the Civil Services Examination in 2005, remains a powerful source of inspiration for UPSC aspirants across the country. His story of determination, discipline, and smart preparation continues to guide young minds who dream of serving the nation through the Indian Administrative Service.
Early life and inspiration
Growing up in Tirunelveli, Nagarajan was deeply influenced by the respect and responsibility carried by the district collector. Witnessing the impact of civil servants on people’s lives motivated him to set his sights on the IAS. His parents, both employees at BSNL, and his supportive family environment further encouraged his journey.

Education and preparation
Nagarajan completed his schooling at Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Tirunelveli and pursued electrical and electronics engineering at BITS Pilani, Rajasthan. Soon after graduation, he began preparing for the UPSC exam. His tall frame and towering personality earned him the nickname “Bheem” among college friends, but it was his intellectual depth and focus that truly defined him.
The UPSC journey
Success did not come overnight. Nagarajan attempted the exam four times before emerging as the national topper in 2005.
In his first attempt (2000), he cleared the mains but fell short in the final stage.
In his second attempt, he secured rank 137 and joined the Railway Traffic Services.
After further refining his strategy, he finally achieved his dream with AIR 1 in the fourth attempt.
He experimented with optional subjects—starting with physics and geography, then moving to sociology and geography—before finding the right balance for his strengths.
His philosophy on success
Nagarajan believes success in Civil Services is a combination of hard work and perseverance, with luck only playing a role in eliminating those who are unprepared. On the day he cleared the exam, he shared the news with his mother, who recited a line from the Thirukkural: “A mother is happy when she delivers a son, but she is happier when he becomes a scholar.”
Advice for today’s aspirants
Nagarajan’s guidance remains relevant for UPSC hopefuls in 2025:
