Actress Ranya Rao slapped with Rs 102 crore penalty in gold smuggling case

Bengaluru, Sept 2: Jailed Kannada actress Ranya Rao, currently serving a sentence in connection with an illegal gold smuggling case, has been dealt another major blow. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has issued a notice demanding she pay a penalty of Rs 102.55 crore.

The case dates back to her arrest at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, where Ranya was caught attempting to smuggle gold into the country. During the operation, DRI officials seized 14.8 kilograms of gold in her possession.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the actress had travelled to Dubai four times over a span of 15 days, each time allegedly engaging in smuggling activities. The DRI concluded that these trips were part of a coordinated gold smuggling racket in which Ranya Rao played an active role.

Following her arrest, Ranya was convicted under the COFEPOSA Act (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act). She has been sentenced to one year in prison under the stringent Preventive Detention provisions of COFEPOSA, which explicitly bar the possibility of bail for the entire duration of the sentence.

In a recent development, the advisory board overseeing COFEPOSA cases has upheld the detention order, confirming that Ranya Rao will remain behind bars without any chance of interim relief or bail throughout her sentence.

The issuance of the Rs 102.55 crore penalty notice by the DRI comes as part of the financial and legal proceedings under customs and smuggling laws. The notice is aimed at recovering the financial value of the gold she attempted to smuggle, along with additional punitive fines imposed for violation of Indian customs and foreign exchange regulations.

With both criminal sentencing and financial penalties now enforced, Ranya Rao faces serious long-term consequences, marking one of the most high-profile celebrity-linked smuggling cases in recent years

Easy come, easy go. Once someone falls into such a trap, it’s hard to get out, as the greed to earn more never stops. I don’t think she was a renowned actress to have that kind of money to pay such a huge penalty. What a life it will be for her now, spending a prison term among criminals. Whatever name and fame she had is lost because of her illegal activities.
