EU bans gel nail polish over hidden health risks

Brussels, Sep 2: The European Union has officially banned the sale, marketing, and use of gel nail polishes containing trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) from September 1, citing health risks associated with the substance.

TPO, an ingredient responsible for the glossy finish and quick-drying feature of gel nail polish, has been classified in the EU as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction. Studies have linked it to fertility problems, reduced sperm quality, and other reproductive health issues.

Gel nail polish, which rose to popularity in the 2000s, is applied and cured under UV or LED light, offering a durable and chip-resistant finish. However, EU regulators concluded that the potential health risks outweighed its cosmetic appeal.

Until now, TPO was permitted only for professional use at a maximum concentration of 5 per cent. With the new ruling, salons and retailers are required to dispose of existing stocks without exemptions. The ban was first announced in May 2024, giving businesses a few months to prepare, though industry groups have expressed concerns over the short transition period.

Experts note that the decision is precautionary, as large-scale human studies are still limited. “The EU is banning it out of caution. While human harm has not been conclusively proven, the risks are significant enough for stricter regulation,” said dermatologist Dr Hannah Kopelman.

In contrast, TPO remains unregulated in the United States, though dermatologists advise consumers to request TPO-free alternatives if concerned.
