Madrid, Aug 31: In a groundbreaking development, researchers from Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust have unveiled an AI-powered stethoscope capable of diagnosing three major heart conditions in just 15 seconds.

The innovation, showcased at the European Society of Cardiology’s annual congress in Madrid, can detect heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms with remarkable accuracy. The device also conducts a quick ECG, giving doctors a comprehensive instant assessment.

The AI stethoscope marks a significant upgrade to the traditional tool, which has been in use for over 200 years. By analysing minute variations in heartbeat and blood flow that the human ear cannot catch, it enables rapid, early detection and faster access to life-saving treatment.

A large study covering 12,000 patients across 200 UK clinics showed that patients examined with the AI stethoscope were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart failure, three times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, and nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart valve disease.

Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, clinical director at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), hailed the innovation, calling it “an elegant example of how the humble stethoscope, invented more than 200 years ago, can be upgraded for the 21st century.” She stressed that early detection could help patients live longer and healthier lives by avoiding late-stage emergency diagnoses.

The breakthrough is being seen as a major leap forward in diagnostic medicine, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can transform healthcare and save lives through faster, more accurate diagnoses.
