Eric Ozario, champion of Konkani music and cultural heritage, passes away at 76

Media Release

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann, former president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, flag bearer of the Konkani movement and recipient of the title ‘Vishwa Konkani Kala Ratna’ from the Konkani community - Eric Alexander Ozario breathed his last on Friday August 29 at the age of 76.

He had been battling with kidney related ailments for the past few years and was on dialysis. He was undergoing treatment for the past 18 days at Father Muller's Hospital. He is survived by his wife Joyce, children Dr Rashmi Kiran and Rithesh Kiran and numerous admirers.

His last rites will be as follows: On Sunday August 31, a Mass at 11.15 am at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia. His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at Kalaangann from 1 pm to 4.30 pm. Followed by his last rites at 4:30 pm at Boloor crematorium.

A gifted and pioneering musician, Eric devoted his life to the enrichment of Konkani music, striving ceaselessly to bring innovation and artistic excellence to the field. Celebrated as a noble voice magician, he breathed life into the works of both past and contemporary poets, composing melodies for their verses and delivering them to the people with passion and artistry. His insistence on discipline, rigorous practice, punctuality, and fair remuneration for artists set a benchmark of professionalism that reshaped Konkani stage performances.

In his quest for a distinct Konkani identity in music, Eric initiated the Mandd Sobhann musical experiment on November 30, 1986. Over the course of his career, he performed more than 200 Mandd Sobhann Shows in India and abroad, composed music for over a 1000 poems and songs, has performed in over 800 programmes, and produced 26 audio cassettes and CDs, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched richness. Recognising the need to institutionalize this movement, he founded and registered the Mandd Sobhann organization, dedicated to nurturing the Konkani linguistic identity and safeguarding cultural uniqueness. With the support of the community, he established Kalaangann — The Konkani Heritage Centre — ensuring it was not merely a structure but a vibrant nucleus of continuous cultural activity. Along with President Louis J Pinto and the committee, over 2,200 performances of thirty-five artistic experiments were staged, supported by campaigns and tours that inspired deep linguistic pride. Mandd Sobhann to this day holds the only Guinness World Record in the name of Konkani.

As director, Eric master minded and brought to life landmark events including the World’s First Baila Show, Manddo Fest, Porob, Sant, Baila International, Punov, Manddo Utsav, Konkani Mahotsav, Konkani Nirantari, the Global Konkani Music Awards, the First World Konkani Cultural Festival, the Global Konkani Cinema Awards, and five successful seasons of the singing reality show ‘Soad’. His creative vision also gave rise to the blockbuster Konkani film ‘Osmitay’.

Eric’s passion for nurturing young talent was evident in the numerous vacation camps, training programmes, and workshops he organised, attracting youth and children to Konkani art and providing them with platforms to grow. His initiatives ensured the continuity of cultural engagement, with the Monthly Theatre Series being a particularly enduring endeavour.

During his presidency of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy from 2005 to 2008, Konkani programmes flourished across Karnataka, significant literary works were published, and Konkani was introduced as a third language in school curricula. He also championed unity in diversity, working closely with Kudumi, Siddi, Kharvi, and other Konkani-speaking communities to bring their folk arts into the cultural mainstream, and forging strong cultural ties between Goa and Mangalore.

Bringing 145 Konkani organizations from around the globe under one Global Organization, he conducted numerous awareness campaigns and, in collaboration with Mangalore University, conducted a global survey and formulated a Konkani Language Plan. He was one of the architects of the first World Konkani Convention held in Mangaluru. He drafted the roadmap for this convention. Eric Ozario is among the founding directors of the Konkani Language and Culture Foundation.

Beyond culture, Eric was a committed activist. Eric spent many precious years of his youth working for the welfare of workers. When some religiously-led institutions in Mangaluru curtailed workers' rights or failed to provide them, he held the red flag high, fought through unique protests, and restored their rights. Opposing the Central Sahitya Academy’s stand of recognizing Konkani only in the Devanagari script and suppressing other Konkani in other scripts, he fought for justice in the high court for five years on behalf of writers. He has always raised his voice for language, culture, environment, and the rights of the oppressed.

His remarkable journey is documented in three biographies: ‘Red & White’ and ‘The Indefatigable Crusader’ in English, and ‘Tho’kanatl’lo Zhuzari’ in Konkani.

The recipient of the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1993, the prestigious title ‘Vishwa Konkani Kala Ratn’, and a Senior Fellowship from India’s department of culture, Eric was also introduced to audiences nationwide through Doordarshan’s ‘Surabhi’. Numerous organisations, including Barpi Mitr Muscat, Konkani Kutam Bahrain, Daiji Dubai, and the Konkani Natak Sabha, honoured him with lifetime achievement awards, alongside hundreds of other accolades.

A giant in the world of music and a true son of Konkani soil – Eric Bab was not just a musician; he was a visionary, a mentor, and an unshakable pillar of our community. Music flowed through his veins, and his passion was contagious. He didn’t just perform; he lifted others up, giving every newcomer the courage and opportunity to shine on stage. He stood firm for what was right, never backing down in the face of challenges, never afraid of failures or setbacks. That is why he was rightly called an indefatigable warrior – a man whose mission was bigger than himself. His tireless efforts to keep Konkani language and culture alive, through music and art, have left an indelible mark that generations will remember. Today, words fall short as I mourn not just a great musician, but a great friend. A man of principles, generosity, and unwavering spirit. Eric Bab, you will forever live in our hearts, in every note of music, in every Konkani lyric that echoes your dream. Rest in eternal peace, dear friend. Your legacy will never fade😢🙏

Dear Joyce, Ritesh, Rashmi/Alwyn and family members. Saddened to learn about Eric Ozario who was one of the few shining lights in the konkani world with an unselfish motive at all times to promote the cause in every sense of the word - musically, literally and general upliftment of the konkani folks and artistes on the cultuaral front. In his quest to enhance the language and culture he embraced, Eric went all out to show his ability to ensure regulated success to reach heights unseen by anyone else in the konkani world. He was a determined crusader hell bent on accomplishing whatever he undertook. I had the privelege of hosting Eric and his troupe a couple of times in the Gulf for shows which had 'baila' written all over it. Eric was instrumental in promoting konani baila everywhere to say the least. From what I know, he also initiated the konkani cultural touch with his musical wedding arrangements that included all the acts including the universal voviyo. The delicious old world konkani style of marriages was brought to life by Eric's innovative melodies. One is at a loss for words to see such an eminent konkani star gone for ever after a rather interesting innings wherever he touched upon. He was a legend in the konkani cultural world far bigger than anyone else with his numerous efforts to uplift every konkani sphere. One can only pray for his soul to REST IN PEACE and for his family to bear the irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace. DENZIL FERNANDES, BANGALORE

Over the few decades, Eric baab traversed the landscape of Konkani terrain of linguistics, sociolinguistics not as a terror but as a mentor who rubbed in the love of the discipline with the Konkani World which also can be called as Linguistic Evangelism. Erric baab was a tender hearted through gentleman in the virtue of humanity; fight for justice. His vast admiration for flowers represents his being of emotions, purity, openness, love, and the cycle of life. Finally, in return of our good acquaintance over many years Eric baab, what can I return to you now than sprinkle few flowers of Eternal peace over your body ? Let your tribe increase among us.. May you enjoy the Eternal Life as promised by our Lord that which you sang in your Konkani Hymn albums. May you Rest in Peace Eric baab.

The first time I met with Baab-Eric was well over 4 decades ago and I found him to be very passionate in the causes that many of us only "thought about it". Some very casually committed, but he seemed determined to put his ideas of social, cultural Linguistic and a range of several issues to action. May Almighty God have mercy on his soul, shine his eternal light upon him and may he rest in peace. I hope and let's pray that God will give his associates and successors, all that is needed to carry on his legacy. Most of all the Konkani speaking Community around the world should continue to support his work and what he started by continuing to champion the causes with the same passion that the late Eric did for the community and the world at large.

While we rightly recall the extraordinary contribution that Eric Bab has made for Konkani and Konkani community, we cannot ignore the leadership that he offered to the labour movement in this region. He stood up to the high and mighty and workers loved him and looked up to his guidance. He also pursued a wider and more inclusive vision: justice. If you were his friend, there was none like him. He stood by you through the thick and thin. Both Betty and I will miss him dearly. Heartfelt condolences to Joice and his beautiful family. Prof Valerian & Mrs Betilda Rodrigues

There are very few people who take a road which is less travelled and have a journey of a lifetime with unexpected twists and turns and live to tell the stories of the success they had. You were one of them Dear Eric Baab ,You not only took lesser known road but encouraged hundreds of young musicians like me to do the same and build our own world. Today that light of inspiration has become one with this universe which we can only feel in your Songs and a legacy which u have left. Rest in peace Soldier of Konkani you have given everything to a vision you believed in and here onwards that vision will be taken Forward by people. We will miss you Eric Baab forever till we breath Rest in peace

Dear Eric uncle. I was fortunte to have Rithesh and Vishwas Rebimbus as my classmates, while in Aloysius College. It was then, that I started re-listening to Konkani Classics of both you and Wilfy uncle. Through the decades, this has been my mainstay whenever I wanted to dive into konkani music. Both you and Wifly uncle are legends and konkani society is fortunate to have had you both as torchbearers of konkani language and culture. I thank you for the opportunity in the culturally insightful movie " Osmitay" . I had the good fortune of interacting with you personally and it was such a joy. We ( konkans) are forever indebted to your services, for without your guidance and insight, we'd be a barren community/ society. RIP uncle. May your soul find its way to our creator Jesus Christ.

The passing of Bab Eric Ozario is a deep loss to all who love Konkani. To me, he was more than a Konkani activist/singer/organiser/fighter—he was the soul of our language, the voice that carried our heritage with pride. His songs, his spirit, and his tireless fight for Konkani will always remain an inspiration. Ericbab, your music still echoes in our hearts, and your dream for Konkani will live on through all of us. Thank you for showing us what it means to love one’s roots with courage and conviction. You may have left this world, but your spirit will forever sing in the Konkani heart. From - Ancy Paladka

Heartfelt condolences to the Family and Friends. In the early 80"s Eric Baab would come to our parish,Loretto to train us young children and youths for the singing competition at Don Bosco hall Mangalore. A talented guru, he was focused,a little strict, yet always result oriented. Leaving a lasting impression on all of us. With deep gratitude, we bid him farewell and pray for his soul to rest in Peace.Amen
