New Delhi, Aug 26: Indian cricket’s dependable No. 3, Cheteshwar Pujara, has officially retired from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a legendary career that redefined grit and patience in the modern Test arena. The 37-year-old’s farewell has prompted an emotional outpouring from fans and former teammates — none more touching than a tribute from his longtime batting partner and former captain, Virat Kohli.
Taking to Instagram, Kohli wrote, "Thank you for making my job easier at 4, Pujji. You’ve had an amazing career. Congratulations and wish you the best for what’s ahead. God bless @cheteshwarpujara.”
Pujara exits the international stage with an illustrious record: 7,195 runs in 103 Tests, including 19 centuries and 35 fifties, averaging 43.60. He last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final, capping off a career filled with crucial innings and quiet heroics.
Together, Pujara and Kohli formed one of India’s most successful Test partnerships. Across 83 innings, the duo compiled 3,513 runs, including seven century stands and 18 fifty-plus partnerships, often steering India out of tough situations and building match-winning platforms.
One of Pujara’s most iconic performances came during India’s historic 2018-19 Test series victory in Australia — their first ever on Aussie soil. He scored 521 runs in seven innings, frustrating the hosts’ fearsome bowling attack with marathon stays at the crease. Kohli has frequently hailed Pujara’s contribution as the cornerstone of that landmark win.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Pujara shared that the moment was one of immense pride — not sadness.
"For about a week, I thought about it, and I felt this is the right time. Today, when I made the decision, I felt proud. It’s a proud moment for me and my entire family. I’m thankful to all my teammates, coaches, and support staff who were part of this incredible journey," he said.
He also spoke of his long-cherished dream of wearing the India jersey — a dream that he fulfilled with immense discipline and dignity.
"From childhood, it was always my dream to represent India. That dream came true, and the journey that followed gave me so many unforgettable memories. I feel very proud of what I’ve been able to achieve," Pujara said.
As Indian cricket turns a new page, Cheteshwar Pujara leaves behind a legacy etched in resilience, selflessness, and steely determination — a true guardian of Test match tradition.
