Karnataka traffic fine discount scheme collects over Rs 11 crore in just three days

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Aug 26: Despite several measures taken by the traffic police to ensure road discipline, many motorists continue to flout traffic rules and ignore pending fines. To address this issue, the government introduced a special scheme offering a 50% discount on traffic fines, effective from August 23, to encourage citizens to clear their dues.

The response has been overwhelming. On the very first day of the scheme, fines were paid in as many as 1,48,747 cases, resulting in a collection of Rs 4.18 crore. Within just three days, traffic police have successfully collected a massive Rs 11.63 crore from 4,13,204 pending cases across Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

The Bengaluru traffic police department announced the scheme with the aim of reducing pending cases and making it easier for citizens to clear their fines. The discount applies only to violations committed before February 11, 2023. Motorists making payments within the scheme period can benefit from a 50% reduction in the total fine amount.

Citizens have been making payments through online portals, police stations, and other digital platforms, taking full advantage of the relief provided. The initiative has not only helped the government recover crores in dues but has also brought relief to thousands of vehicle owners burdened with unpaid penalties.

The very concept of giving a discount on traffic fines is totally wrong. Our vigilance is compromised. While we frame these laws a lot of efforts have gone in into it but when discount is offered it is done with in a day. Totally an uncalled-for decision. The law makers and the law enforcers, think on giving discount itself is diluting the law. By this defaulter's number will increase and also the violations. Rather, we need to increase the penal fee if not paid on time, 3 to 4 times higher, by doing this treasury may collect much more amount and defaulters will be more careful. By doing this, traffic offenders will think twice before committing any default. Request traffic authorities to be more stringent and having installed AI cameras in most parts of the cities, by default the challans should go to the offenders within short time, so that traffic rules are followed and drive towards an accident-free environment, if not now at least in the near future be attained.

If they provide 50% discount to the fines paid within 1 week, there will not be backlog.

₹11 crore collected as traffic fines? I am 100% sure that money will not be used for repairing roads. Many traffic violations happen because of the poor condition of roads.
