Shubman Gill likely to miss Duleep Trophy ahead of Asia Cup

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Aug 23: Indian cricket team’s Test captain Shubman Gill, 25, may miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy in Bengaluru later this month due to health reasons, a report by Cricbuzz stated. Recently named captain of the North Zone team, Gill is currently "unwell" and resting at home in Chandigarh.

“The physios examined him and submitted a health report to the BCCI about 24 hours ago,” the report added. Sources close to the India Test skipper confirmed the development, though officials from the BCCI and selection committees did not respond to queries about his availability.

Gill’s potential absence comes just weeks before the Asia Cup, beginning September 9 in the UAE. Even if he participates in the Duleep Trophy, he would not be able to play all matches due to scheduling conflicts with the continental event.

The 2025 Asia Cup will feature 19 matches across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with the final at Dubai International Stadium on September 28. India and Pakistan are set to meet in Group A on September 14, with a possible Super Four clash on September 21, and a potential final showdown if both teams advance.

Shubman Gill had recently impressed in England and retained his place as vice-captain for the Asia Cup T20, but his fitness now remains under close watch ahead of the high-profile tournament.
