FBI raids former US NSA John Bolton’s home in classified memoir probe

Washington, Aug 22: In a major development, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the Maryland home of former US National Security Adviser (NSA) John Bolton on Friday, in connection with an investigation into alleged leaks of classified information in his 2020 memoir The Room Where It Happened.

The raid, ordered by FBI director Kash Patel, came shortly after Bolton took a swipe at US President Donald Trump on social media, saying his repeated meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin had brought no progress on the Ukraine conflict, but would continue as “Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize.”

Trump, who claimed he learnt of the raid through television, lashed out at Bolton, calling him a “lowlife” and accusing him of pushing former US president George W. Bush into “ridiculous bombings in the Middle East.” He further alleged Bolton “always wants to kill people” and labelled him “unpatriotic.”

Bolton, who served as Trump’s NSA between 2018 and 2019, has since emerged as a sharp critic of the former president’s foreign and national security policies. Trump had earlier attempted to block Bolton’s memoir, arguing it breached a non-disclosure agreement, though the Justice Department had dropped the case in 2021 under the Biden administration.

The latest development comes amid Bolton’s strong criticism of Trump’s tariff policy on India. In a recent interview with NDTV, he had termed the steep tariffs imposed on New Delhi “a mistake in the bilateral relationship.”
