Hingoli, Aug 22: In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old man allegedly killed his 17-year-old daughter after she refused to marry a relative’s son, before ending his own life in Hingoli district early on Wednesday morning.

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother and two younger brothers, aged 12 and 8, woke up to the tragedy.

According to Hingoli superintendent of police Shrikrishna Kokate, the accused, identified as Syed Shaker, a driver by profession, had arranged his daughter’s marriage with a relative’s son. However, the girl opposed the decision, which led to frequent arguments at home over the past three days.

“On Wednesday morning, the man allegedly smothered his daughter to death with a pillow while she was asleep, fearing social stigma if the marriage was called off. He then died by suicide through hanging,” SP Kokate said.

Police investigations revealed that on the night of August 19, Shaker allegedly gave his wife, who suffers from diabetes and hypertension, sleeping pills along with her regular medicines to ensure she remained asleep. He then went to his daughter’s room and suffocated her.

His two sons were also asleep in the house during the incident. “Overcome with guilt, he attempted to end his life multiple times. He first tried to slit his wrist and stabbed himself in the chest, but when these attempts failed, he resorted to hanging, which proved fatal,” an investigating officer said.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem to the government hospital in Hingoli before being handed over to relatives for burial. Following a complaint lodged by the deceased man’s brother, Hingoli City police registered a case of murder against Shaker under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
