Rome, Aug 21: The new Serie A season kicks off this weekend with champions Napoli beginning their title defence away to Sassuolo, while Inter Milan host Torino.
Napoli, who edged Inter by a single point last season, will look to avoid a repeat of their 2023 post-title collapse. Under coach Antonio Conte, now in his second season, the southern club has strengthened with the arrival of Kevin De Bruyne, joining Scott McTominay and Stanislav Lobotka in midfield. However, concerns remain over striker Romelu Lukaku’s fitness, with surgery on his thigh muscle being considered.
Inter enter the season under new coach Cristian Chivu after a trophyless campaign last year. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram continue as their main strike force, though questions remain over squad depth.
Elsewhere, AC Milan have reappointed Massimiliano Allegri, while Roma have turned to Gian Piero Gasperini. Maurizio Sarri returns to Lazio, with newly promoted sides Pisa and Sassuolo bringing in World Cup-winning coaches Alberto Gilardino and Fabio Grosso.
Among the headline moves, Luka Modric has joined Milan after leaving Real Madrid, fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for the club.
