Kaipunjalu Uroos: Symbol of Hindu-Muslim harmony on Kaup coast

Kaup, Aug 21: In a region often in the news for sensitive communal issues, the coastal village of Kaipunjalu in Kaup taluk stands out as a beacon of harmony. Here, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians come together every year to celebrate the Kaipunjalu Uroos, held at the dargah of Syed Arabi Valiyullah.

What makes this dargah unique is its location — it stands on land belonging to the Shriyan family of the Mogaveera community, a Hindu household. While Muslims organize the annual Uroos celebration, it is the local Hindu family that lights the lamps inside the dargah throughout the year.

The Uroos is held on the last Wednesday of Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar, and witnesses participation from people of all communities.

“Our family has been connected with this dargah for generations. For us, it is a matter of faith and harmony. Hindu fishermen come to this dargah to offer prayers, and many make offerings. We have witnessed the greatness of this place,” says Gunavanta Shriyan, a member of the family that owns the land.

With a history of nearly 150 years, the Uroos is organized under the supervision of the Kapu Jamiya Mosque management and the annual Uroos committee. A special highlight of the event is the distribution of paayasam as prasada to all devotees. Local Hindus contribute rice, jaggery, puffed rice, jasmine flowers, and dates for its preparation, making it a true community offering.

For the fishing community, this dargah holds even deeper significance. Each year, before venturing into the sea, local fishermen visit the shrine, offer prayers, and make offerings, seeking blessings for a safe and prosperous fishing season.

In essence, the Kaipunjalu Uroos has grown into a powerful symbol of unity, embodying the shared traditions and mutual respect of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians along the Kaup coast.
