Partition horrors to be taught in Schools: NCERT introduces new module for classes 6–8

New Delhi, Aug 16: India now officially observes August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, and this year marks a significant step in acknowledging the tragic events of 1947 through education. The NCERT has introduced a dedicated module on Partition for students of Classes 6 to 8, aiming to highlight the human cost of one of the subcontinent’s most traumatic chapters.

Welcoming the move, Union Minister and BJP MP Sanjay Seth stressed the importance of educating the younger generation. “So far, our textbooks have spoken at length about rulers like Babur, Humayun, and Aurangzeb. But what about the millions who lost their lives, homes, and families during Partition? We have a right to know that history,” Seth told reporters.

He added, “When one family suffers, it’s devastating. Now imagine millions facing violence, displacement, and atrocities, especially women. This chapter must be told truthfully, so future generations can understand the cost of freedom.”

BJP leader Madan Rathore also weighed in, placing blame for Partition on competing ambitions within the Indian leadership. “Mahatma Gandhi opposed Partition, but both Jinnah and Nehru were determined. Each wanted to lead, and that led to the split. Jinnah left for Pakistan, Nehru remained in India, but in between, Kashmiris and others bore unimaginable suffering,” he said.

Rathore called for a deeper understanding of history through the lens of national unity and security. Quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “Security must come before prosperity. Today, we are self-reliant in defence — with weapons like BrahMos missiles being produced domestically — and that sends a strong message to our adversaries.”

The NCERT module will reportedly include personal accounts, migration stories, and historical context to help students connect with the emotional and cultural consequences of the Partition. The initiative aligns with the Centre’s ongoing push to reshape curriculum with an emphasis on national history, security, and unity.
