Washington, Aug 14: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order easing regulations for the private space industry, in a move widely seen as a major boost to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The order eliminates certain environmental reviews, aiming to “substantially” increase the number of space launches in the US by 2030.
Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has been vocal about ambitious plans to send humans to the Moon and Mars — both missions slated to use Musk’s massive Starship rocket. SpaceX, which already dominates the global launch market with over 130 launches last year, could now see that number rise significantly under the new policy.
“It is the policy of the United States to enhance American greatness in space by enabling a competitive launch marketplace,” the order states. The directive also instructs Transportation Secretary and current NASA administrator Sean Duffy to expedite or eliminate environmental reviews for rocket launches.
Environmentalists, however, have slammed the move. The Center for Biological Diversity called the order “reckless,” warning it could lead to the destruction of protected plants and wildlife. “This reckless order puts people and wildlife at risk from private companies launching giant rockets that often explode and wreak devastation on surrounding areas,” said Jared Margolis of the group.
Starship, touted as the most powerful rocket ever built, has faced multiple setbacks, including a fiery explosion during a test in June. Still, Musk remains steadfast in his “fail fast, learn fast” approach, believing it will pave the way for Mars colonization.
In May, the Federal Aviation Administration increased the approved annual Starship launches from five to 25, claiming the higher frequency would not harm the environment.
