Tourist’s close call with charging elephant sparks safety concerns in Bandipur

Chamarajanagar, Aug 11: A tourist’s reckless attempt to approach a wild elephant in Bandipur Tiger Reserve ended in a near-tragic encounter that has now gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred on the Melkamanahalli–Bandipur stretch, when the tourist ventured dangerously close to an elephant standing on the roadside — apparently to capture a photo or video. The animal, provoked by the intrusion, charged at him. In a desperate bid to escape, the man ran, only to stumble and fall on the road. The elephant came within striking distance but, in a twist of fate, turned away and walked back into the forest.

The entire chase was caught on camera by bystanders and widely circulated online, drawing sharp criticism over repeated instances of tourists ignoring forest safety rules.

Prabhakaran, Director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, said the tourist’s identity remains unknown as he left the spot in a vehicle before forest personnel could reach. “We have alerted hospitals in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Tamil Nadu and Kerala to report any case of elephant trampling, but none has been recorded. We are also trying to trace the person who uploaded the video,” he said, adding that the offender will be prosecuted once identified.

Authorities say such behaviour endangers both humans and wildlife. In February 2024, a similar incident in Bandipur involving a tourist from Andhra Pradesh ended in a close escape; the person was later fined Rs 25,000 and let off with a warning.

Forest officials have once again urged visitors to follow safety guidelines and maintain a safe distance from wild animals, warning that violations could attract heavy penalties.

"when the tourist ventured dangerously close to an elephant standing on the roadside — apparently to capture a photo or video" Approaching wild elephants or when they cross the road with young ones or trying to instigate them for fun is like provoking them. Many years back me with our family faced similar incident in Bandipur sanctuary bur our driver engaged the gear and picked speed and escaped from the angry elephant.👌🤣🐘🐘🐘

Oh my God,tourist had really luck.God must have had pity or Elephant with him?For one close foto risking life?Never ever provoke wild animals, and they will let you also live.Respect to each other is always good.Nowadays tourists are really nuisence for everyone .In all places tourists are overcrowding ,and locals are annoyed because how they trouble locals. They pay high price for normal eateries ,hotels ,or things.which locals too suffer because they dont get it inmarket since selling to tourists or hiding it.See some places in Spain , Italy ,Greek ,venedig.etc.Since everywhere hotels are built for tourists locals are not getting rooms, place to buy or build houses. They write,Tourists go home, scarcity of drinking water ,everywhere throwing garbage which lands in Meer ,or roads ,drinking water sources.

The wild elephant was human. The human was worse than a wild animal.
