Latur, Aug 9: A long-standing dispute over family land in a Latur district village culminated in a horrific murder-suicide, leaving a community in shock. Authorities confirmed that 45-year-old Baban Ghuge allegedly killed his 70-year-old mother, Laxmibai Ghuge, and then took his own life.

The tragedy unfolded in Sangvi village, where tensions had reportedly been escalating between the mother and son over the sale of a piece of agricultural land. According to police, Baban had been pressuring his mother to sell the property, a request she consistently denied. This disagreement is believed to have led to frequent arguments, culminating in a violent confrontation.

Investigators believe that Baban strangled his mother and then buried her body in a nearby sugarcane field to conceal the crime. Her disappearance went unnoticed for a few days until concerned villagers began a search. Their investigation led them to the sugarcane field, where they discovered freshly turned soil. Upon digging, they made the gruesome discovery of Laxmibai’s body, sparking outrage and grief.

Shortly after the murder, Baban reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his home. Police speculate that guilt or fear of being caught may have driven him to this act.

Renapur police responded to the scene, recovered both bodies, and sent them for autopsies. In a somber ceremony, the mother and son were cremated on the same funeral pyre, witnessed by devastated relatives and stunned villagers. Local residents have described the incident as a "dark and unforgettable day," expressing disbelief that a land dispute could lead to such a profound tragedy. The police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the exact sequence of events.
