Bantwal, Aug 8: Sports not only provide healthy competition but also help foster harmony among students, said former Taluk Panchayat president Padmanabha Rai.

He was speaking after inaugurating the zonal-level primary and high school boys’ and girls’ throwball tournament organised at Kalladka Model School on August 7. The event was held under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Department of School Education, office of the Block Education Officer, Bantwal, and the Kalladka Model Higher Primary School.

Presiding over the programme, School Development Committee president Madhusoodan Aithal emphasised the importance of balancing academics with sports in schools.

“Along with lessons, sports are essential for children. They help instil positive thinking and strengthen the mind,” said Golthamajalu gram panchayat development officer Vijay Shankar Alva.

Among those present on the dais were gram panchayat vice-president Jayanth Makkar, members Rajesh Kottari and Lakshmi Ganesh Hotel owner Rajendra Holl, Lakshmi Nivas Hotel owner Shivarama Holl, Kalladka cluster CRP Jyothi, School Alumni Association president Yathin Kumar, School Development Committee member Suresh, Primary School Physical Education Teachers’ Association president Indushekhar, sports meet nodal physical education teacher Jagadish, Golthamajalu High School physical education teacher Prakash, and retired physical education teacher Shankar.

Head teacher and alumnus of the school, Aboobakker Ashraf, welcomed the gathering. Teacher Tejakshi Dinesh proposed the vote of thanks, while teacher Swati Jagadish Rai compered the programme.
