Puttur, Aug 7: A woman was allegedly murdered by her brother-in-law over a dispute related to a divorce settlement, according to a complaint registered at Puttur Town Police Station.

The deceased, Mamatha, was reportedly assaulted and later drowned in flowing water by the accused Lokayya alias Sundara, a resident of Kedila in Bantwal. The incident is said to have occurred on August 6 in Valakumeru, a locality in Kedila village, Bantwal.

The case was initially filed as an Unnatural Death Report (UDR No. 24/2025) under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023. However, based on a detailed complaint by Mamatha’s husband Ganapathi alias Ramannagowda (44), police have now registered a murder case against Lokayya.

According to the complaint, a conflict arose between Mamatha and the accused regarding a divorce compensation matter. During the argument, the accused allegedly attacked her with the intent to kill. After she lost consciousness, he is believed to have pushed her into flowing water, leading to her death.

Puttur Town police have registered a case under Crime No. 69/2025 invoking Sections 115(2) and 103(1) of the BNS 2023 and are currently investigating the matter.
