Media Release

Mangaluru, Aug 4: The third day of the novena in preparation for the feast of St Lawrence was devoutly observed at St Lawrence Church and Shrine, Bondel. The day began with adoration led by Dr Praveen Leo Lasrado, followed by the Holy Eucharist.

Dr Ignatius D’Souza, bishop of the diocese of Bareilly, presided as the main celebrant. He was joined by concelebrants: Dr Praveen Leo Lasrado, secretary of the Catholic Board of Education, Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza, parish priest, Fr Lawrence Cutinha, assistant parish priest, Fr Peter Mascarenhas, Fr Ashwin Vas, SVD, Fr James, MSIJ.

In his homily, Fr Praveen Leo invited the faithful to lift their hearts toward what is eternal. He reminded the congregation that true hope lies in placing trust not in fleeting earthly pleasures, but in the promises of heaven. He emphasized three key takeaways: Recognize what truly belongs to you – not material possessions, but your soul and your relationship with God. Cherish your loved ones – treasure the people God has placed in your life and lead them in faith. Focus on the journey to heaven – live each day with eternity in mind. He urged the faithful to detach from worldly things, to give generously, share with others, and teach children these same values—to live a life rooted in hope, generosity, and divine purpose.

At the end of the Mass, Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza extended heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Ignatius D’Souza and presented him with a bouquet as a token of appreciation.

The bishop, together with Fr Andrew Leo, felicitated J R Lobo, former MLA, and Denis D’Silva, newly elected president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Campaign Committee, with a shawl and memento, wishing them success in their political journey.

In his message, bishop Ignatius reflected on the words from the Book of Ecclesiastes: 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity,' —name, power, and wealth—all will pass away.” He reminded the faithful that though we strive and labor, we must ultimately leave everything behind. He prayed that St Lawrence, who lived a life of detachment and holiness, may intercede for us, bless us, and lead us closer to God as we prepare to celebrate his feast on August 10.

Earlier in the morning, confessions were arranged for children and parents. The liturgy was led by Cascia and Bondel, and the Padre Pio Choir Bejai beautifully led the singing during the morning Mass. A fellowship meal was then served to the large gathering of the faithful.

The evening service began with adoration followed by the Holy Mass at 6:00 pm, celebrated by Fr Anthony Serra, parish priest of Mulki. Concelebrants included Fr Peter Gonsalves, principal of St Lawrence English Medium School, Fr Lawrence Cutinha, assistant parish priest, and Fr James Britto MSIJ.

In his homily, Fr Anthony emphasized that God has graciously entrusted each of us with unique and valuable talents—not to be hoarded or used for personal gain, but to be shared generously in service of others. He offered three guiding principles for a meaningful Christian life:1. Let go of what is harmful and choose what is good and life-giving.2Live and work sincerely with honesty, dedication, and integrity. 3.Be rich in God’s eyes through compassion, kindness, and generous love.

The liturgy was led by Kelarai and Bondel parish, while the Derebail Kids Choir beautifully led the singing, adding a spiritual vibrancy to the celebration. As part of the day's blessings, holy water was sprinkled and devotees were anointed with holy oil, invoking divine grace upon all during both the morning and evening Masses. Special prayers were also offered for all children.

The faithful continued to participate in large numbers, united in prayer, devotion, and the spirit of St Lawrence.
