Detroit, Aug 3: The opening night of WWE SummerSlam 2025 delivered pure drama and shock as CM Punk’s World Heavyweight Championship reign lasted only a few minutes.
After a hard-fought victory over defending champion Gunther, Punk barely had time to celebrate before Seth Rollins, previously believed to be injured, shocked fans by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.
In a jaw-dropping moment, Rollins rushed into the ring and pinned an exhausted Punk, revealing his “injury” had been a well-crafted deception. The crowd erupted as Rollins walked away with the championship, leaving Punk stunned.
The WWE Universe erupted with reactions online and off. Drew McIntyre, who had his own past entanglement with both men, responded sharply on social media. "Karma's a hell of a thing," he wrote. “Seth has done exactly to Punk what Punk did to me, and tonight was the cherry on top. Congratulations Seth. You deserve it.”
For fans needing a refresher, at WrestleMania 40, McIntyre had defeated Rollins for the title, only to be blindsided by CM Punk, who was at ringside as a commentator. Their brawl opened the door for Damien Priest to cash in his own Money in the Bank contract and walk away champion — a pattern that seemed to repeat with roles reversed at SummerSlam.
The night proved once again why WWE remains the epicenter of sports entertainment — with twists, rivalries, and drama that keep fans on the edge of their seats.
