Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: A 15-year-old girl from Puri district, Odisha, who was allegedly set on fire by three unidentified men, succumbed to her injuries late Friday night at AIIMS Delhi, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi confirmed on Saturday.
In a heartfelt message on social media, CM Majhi expressed deep sorrow, stating:
“Despite all the efforts of the government and the round-the-clock endeavours of the specialist medical team at AIIMS Delhi, her life could not be saved... I pray for the eternal peace of the girl's soul and strength for her grieving family.”

Odisha Deputy CM Pravati Parida also offered condolences, noting the government's and doctors’ efforts to save her, but said, “We are deeply saddened that she could not be saved.”
The Incident
The gruesome attack occurred on July 19 near the Bhargavi River in Puri, as the girl was returning home after visiting a friend. She was reportedly abducted by three men, taken to a secluded spot, doused in a flammable substance, and set ablaze.
Despite suffering severe burns (over 70%), the victim managed to reach a nearby home, where locals rushed her to a hospital. Due to her critical condition, she was airlifted to New Delhi the following day and admitted to the Burn ICU at AIIMS.
Doctors reported she was initially conscious and stable, and even underwent skin grafting, but her condition deteriorated, and she died late Friday.
Investigation Underway
The incident has triggered widespread public outrage across Odisha. The Odisha Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants, but no arrests have been made so far.
A senior police officer confirmed that an intensive investigation is ongoing, including analysis of call records, CCTV footage, and witness testimonies.
The girl’s death has once again highlighted concerns over women’s safety and law enforcement accountability in the region. Protests and candlelight vigils are expected in Puri and Bhubaneswar in the coming days as civil society groups demand justice.
