Sirsi, July 31: A police case has been registered in Sirsi after four Instagram accounts allegedly circulated defamatory posts falsely linking the recent suicide of a police officer to an ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Dharmasthala.

The complaint was filed by Kshama (20), daughter of the deceased officer Khierappa Ghatakambale, a sub-inspector who was serving at the Bantwal Rural police station until his recent death by suicide, reportedly due to personal reasons.

On July 28, while browsing social media, Kshama discovered that four Instagram profiles had uploaded images of her father in police uniform, along with false narratives suggesting his death was connected to a high-profile SIT case.

The posts, she alleged, were crafted to intentionally defame her late father, provoke unrest, and create fear among the public. They also attempted to cast unwarranted suspicion over his death and malign the integrity of his service.

Based on her complaint, the New Market police station in Sirsi has registered a case under Sections 352 and 353(1)(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities have taken the matter seriously and are continuing their investigation.
