Udupi, July 29: The approach road to Indrali railway station continues to endanger public safety due to a landslide that occurred over three years ago, with no permanent remedial action taken to date. The eroded edge remains exposed and covered in overgrown grass, creating a deceptive surface that endangers pedestrians and motorists.
Residents say the grassy slope misleads commuters into thinking it is solid ground. “People unknowingly walk or ride close to the edge. One misstep can lead to disaster,” said a local shopkeeper who uses the road daily.

On the other side, a fast-flowing stream runs dangerously close to the road, especially during the monsoon. Heavy rains from elevated terrain flood the road, making it slippery and extremely difficult to navigate. The unchecked flow of water adds to the erosion, further weakening the road’s structure.
“The lack of a protective sidewall or even basic warning signs is shocking,” said another resident. “We’ve been raising this issue for years, but nothing has been done,” the resident added.
With several schools, offices, and residential areas nearby, the road is used by hundreds every day. Locals argue that the area remains a disaster waiting to happen unless immediate steps are taken.
Despite multiple complaints and written appeals to local authorities and the railway department, no concrete action has been initiated. “We’re not asking for luxuries—just basic safety measures,” said a commuter.
Residents are now urging the district administration and railway officials to intervene without further delay. Their demands include construction of a sidewall, installation of cautionary signage, and improvement of the drainage system to prevent further erosion and ensure public safety.
