Beltangady, July 29: A special investigation team (SIT), accompanied by a team of doctors, launched an operation on Tuesday to exhume human remains from the forest area near the Netravati bathing ghat in Dharmasthala, where multiple bodies are suspected to have been buried.

The operation was conducted in the presence of the complainant who had earlier led the authorities to specific burial sites. Officers from the SIT reached the Beltangady office early in the morning. Two experienced doctors from KMC Hospital, Mangaluru — Dr Jagadish Rao and Dr Rashmi — arrived at the SIT office following directives to assist in the forensic recovery of skeletal remains from the forested locations identified on July 28.

The exhumation process began at the site marked during Monday's inspection, with the help of 12 labourers under the supervision of the assistant commissioner.

Senior officials including DIG Anucheth, SIT investigation officer Jitendra Dayama, SP Simon, Puttur assistant commissioner Stella Varghese, and Beltangady tahsildar Prithvi Sanikam, along with personnel from the revenue, forest, forensic (FSL, SoCo), ANF, internal security, and police departments, are part of the joint operation.
