Mangaluru, Jul 28: A memorial meeting was held at Sandesha Hall here on July 26 to pay tribute to renowned Konkani writer Gladys Rego, who passed away recently. The event was organised by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy in association with various Konkani organisations.

Representatives from Sandesha Foundation, Mandd Sobhann, Konkani Lekhak Sangh (Karnataka), St Aloysius College Konkani Association, Daiji Dubai Mangaluru Unit, and Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka offered floral tributes.

Academy president Joachim Stany Alvares, who welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory remarks, said, “Gladys Rego was a valiant woman of Konkani literature. She worked extensively across genres—publishing, research, folklore, short stories, poetry, and novels. She was a beacon of inspiration. Let us carry forward her legacy.”

He further noted that the academy has initiated a tradition of honouring senior writers while they are still alive. “Due to age and health issues, many of them remain at home, and we have begun visiting them at their residences to felicitate and extend our respects.”

Veteran Kannada writer B M Rohini and Konkani writers Rony Arun, Dolphy Lobo, Hemacharya, Pinto Vamanjoor, Raymond D’Cunha, Andrew L D’Cunha, and Stephen Quadros paid rich tributes to Gladys Rego through their messages.

Academy members Ronald Crasta and Sapna Crasta, along with other writers and literary figures, were present.

Irene Rebello compered the programme and delivered the vote of thanks.
