'Journalism needs vision, not just fashion': Lakshmi Machhina at Brahmavar Press Day event

Brahmavar, Jul 26: “Don’t treat journalism as a fashion; have a vision,” urged senior journalist Lakshmi Machhina of Udayavani daily, while addressing students and media aspirants on the occasion of Press Day Celebrations organised by the Brahmavar Taluk Journalists’ Association.

Speaking as the resource person at the event held at Manuru-Padukare Government Pre-University College on July 26, Lakshmi Machina emphasised that the younger generation must take a genuine interest in journalism. “Don’t enter this field with false enthusiasm created by fictional stories and fake news circulating on social media. Instead, cultivate a strong vision and pursue journalism with integrity,” he advised.

He further remarked on the current societal confusion between truth and falsehood. “While the number of people who appreciate truth and goodness may seem fewer today, that should not discourage us. If we uphold good values, there will always be those who recognise and respect it,” he said.

Veteran journalist U S Shenoy also addressed the gathering, noting that journalism offers excellent opportunities for the youth. “However, the field is not without challenges. It’s important to study, understand its pros and cons, and then choose it as a career wisely,” he advised.

The programme was inaugurated by Dennis Banz, principal of Padukere Government PU College, who also extended his best wishes.

Brahmavar Journalists’ Association president Rajesh Ganiga Achlady presided over the function. On the occasion, senior journalist and former president of the Karkala Journalists’ Association, Petri Bhaskar Rao, was felicitated with the Press Day Award. U S Shenoy was also honoured for his appointment as a member of the Karnataka State Media Academy.

The event was attended by Udupi District Journalists’ Association president Alevoor Rajesh Shetty, Brahmavar Taluk secretary Harish Kiran Tunga, and members Ravindra Kota, Praveen Muddoor, Ganesh Saibarakatte, Praveen Kumar, and Ibrahim Saheb.

Mohan Udupa welcomed the gathering, while Bandimata Shivaram Acharya and K G Vaidya introduced the awardees. The programme was emceed by the association’s founding president Chitturu Prabhakar Acharya, and Harish Kiran Tunga proposed the vote of thanks.
