Mangaluru, Jul 23: In a major boost to women’s education in coastal Karnataka, assembly Speaker UT Khader announced that a women’s first grade college with a hostel facility will soon be established between Konaje and Fajiru in the Ullal region. A sum of Rs 17 crore has been allocated by the minority welfare department, and the project has been formally approved by the cabinet.
Addressing a press conference, Khader stated that the proposed institution will serve rural women students, with a 75:25 minority-majority student ratio. Importantly, even local students who do not require hostel facilities will have access to the college, ensuring inclusivity in higher education.
Khader further added that the Waqf department is making arrangements to start a women’s pre-university college (PUC) near Meelangady in Ullal Nagar. “Girls who prefer an exclusive women’s college can pursue their studies here, while those opting for co-education will have other options in the constituency,” he clarified.
Infrastructure push: Bridges, roads, and underpass projects
On the infrastructure front, Khader addressed long-standing demands regarding the Ullal-Thokkottu Railway Line, which has posed difficulties for commuters over the years. “A pedestrian underpass is in the pipeline, with a tender process already initiated at a cost of Rs 2 crore,” he said.
Further, two new bridges will be developed jointly by the PWD and railway department, each costing Rs 4 crore, to enhance road connectivity between Thokkottu and Ullal. “These upgrades will also facilitate road widening work, bringing major relief to daily travellers,” Khader assured.
Rain havoc: Drone survey to address urban flooding
With heavy rainfall causing flooding in three parts of Ullal, Khader revealed that he has appealed to the Chief Minister for enhanced compensation to affected households. “Water entered several homes, causing serious damage. The root cause is encroachment into sewer lines,” he said.
To address the issue scientifically, the Ullal Municipal council will soon conduct a drone survey to map drainage patterns and create awareness among the public to prevent further encroachments. “Only a technological approach backed with civic responsibility can resolve this recurring issue,” Khader stressed.
