Udupi, July 22: “Mog ani Balidan”, a book written by Dr Eugene D'Souza Moodubelle and published under the Vision Konkani project initiated by philanthropist Michael D'Souza, was released on Tuesday, July 22, at the Anugraha Pastoral Centre of the Diocese of Udupi.

The event was jointly organised by the Commission for Social Communications of the Diocese of Udupi and Bellevision.com. The book was released by Michael D'Souza, founder and promoter of the Vision Konkani project, along with Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of the Diocese of Udupi. Also present were Fr Denis D'Sa, director of the Commission for Social Communications, Diocese of Udupi; Elias D'Souza, convener of Bellevision.com; and H M Pernal, editor of Kitaal.com.

In his address, Michael D'Souza said, “I have attended many Konkani programmes, but today I feel especially happy to see the number of people gathered here. It is a strong indication that Konkani has a bright future. Never forget your mother tongue, mother, and native place. We have both a responsibility and an opportunity to work for Konkani. As our children grow, let us introduce them to Konkani newspapers and literature and encourage them to attend Konkani programmes. Let us speak Konkani when we meet. If we are developed as a community and able to teach Konkani today, it is thanks to the service-oriented institutions founded by our priests and nuns and the continued support of our community leaders. There should be no unmet needs in our community.”

Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of the Diocese of Udupi, said, “The Vision Konkani project launched by Michael D'Souza is truly commendable. His vision for the betterment of the Konkani language and his dedication to the motherland are admirable. I congratulate Dr Eugene D'Souza Moodubelle on his new book. He has made noteworthy contributions by documenting the history of the Udupi Diocese and the 52 churches within it—a treasure that must be preserved. I look forward to more Konkani books from him. Many believe that the Udupi Diocese is a rich one—and I agree. In every field, our people shine. In Konkani too, we have several active teams. While plays are often written in Mangaluru, most are staged in Udupi. There is now a need for youth from our diocese to enter the field of Konkani literature. The Vision Konkani project provides a great opportunity for them to publish their work.”

A one-minute silence was observed in memory of Konkani writer Gladys Rego, who passed away on July 21.

In his vote of thanks, Dr Eugene D'Souza Moodubelle expressed his gratitude to Michael D'Souza and the Vision Konkani team for publishing his book, and to all who supported him throughout the process.

On the occasion, the poster for the upcoming film festival organised by Nirantar Udyavar was also released.

H M Pernal compered the programme, while Fr Denis D'Sa welcomed the gathering. A large number of writers, poets, and literature enthusiasts were present.
