Adampur, Jul 22: In a heart-wrenching tragedy that has left the town of Adampur in shock, a four-year-old girl studying in UKG lost her life after being run over by her school bus right outside the premises of a private school in Alawalpur, Jalandhar, early Monday morning.

The deceased, Kirat Kaur, daughter of Inderjit Singh—a resident of Udesiyan village and a local car mechanic—was reportedly getting off the school bus (registration number PB08-DG-8214) around 7:30 am, when the driver moved the vehicle, fatally crushing the child under its wheels. She was rushed first to a local hospital and later referred to a private facility in Jalandhar, where she was declared brought dead.

According to the complaint filed by Kirat’s father, the bus had been regularly picking up and dropping the girl every day. He alleged gross negligence on the part of the school management, stating that he had previously requested school authorities to appoint a staff member to assist small children while boarding and deboarding. His plea, however, went unheeded.

The Adampur police have registered a case against 11 individuals, including bus driver Jiwan Singh, school principal Bindu, chairman Swami Ram Bharti, the school manager, and members of the school board, under Sections 281, 106(1), 3, and 5 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While the driver was detained for questioning, a formal arrest is pending the arrival of the post-mortem report.

The horrifying incident sparked widespread outrage among local residents and relatives of the deceased, who gathered in large numbers outside the school. In a symbolic act of protest, they blocked the national highway near the school for around 20 minutes, demanding justice and strict action against the accused. Police officials led by DSP Kulwant Singh intervened and managed to calm the agitated crowd, assuring a thorough investigation.

“This is an unfortunate incident. An FIR has been registered based on the father's statement, and we will act against the accused. The investigation is ongoing,” said DSP Singh.

The tragic death of little Kirat has raised serious questions about student safety, particularly for younger children, and has reignited public calls for stricter enforcement of school transportation safety norms, especially in institutions located along busy highways.
