New Delhi, Jul 21: The Monsoon Session of Parliament kicked off with intense confrontations on Monday, as the ruling government and the Opposition clashed over Operation Sindoor, the recent Indian military strike targeting terror infrastructure deep inside Pakistani territory.

From the very outset, both Houses were engulfed in chaos. The Opposition demanded an immediate and focused discussion on Operation Sindoor, using it as a springboard to question the government over the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The government, on the other hand, expressed readiness for a debate but insisted that proper parliamentary procedure be followed.

The Lok Sabha turned unruly shortly after proceedings began. Opposition MPs disrupted the Question Hour, chanting slogans and pressing for all other agenda items to be shelved in favor of a discussion on the Pahalgam killings. Speaker Om Birla attempted to restore order, but with no success. The commotion forced an adjournment just 20 minutes into the session.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated assertions about mediating peace between India and Pakistan. While seeking a debate, Kharge clarified that the intention was not to politicize the military operation. Responding firmly, Rajya Sabha Leader J.P. Nadda reiterated the government’s willingness to engage in discussions on any issue, provided that established norms of the House were respected.

Setting a contrasting tone before the session commenced, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media, calling the Monsoon Session a “celebration of India’s strength, pride, and victories.” He highlighted national milestones, including Operation Sindoor and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s recent return from space, as symbols of India’s growing global stature.

Earlier in the day, the Congress submitted Suspension of Business notices in both Houses, seeking urgent debates on two contentious issues: the Pahalgam terror attack and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Opposition has accused the government of a serious security failure in Jammu and Kashmir and alleged manipulation of the voter rolls ahead of crucial state elections in Bihar.

With a politically charged atmosphere and no signs of compromise, the Monsoon Session appears set for a turbulent ride.
