Bagalkot, July 20: In a shocking incident that has raised eyebrows across the region, two men were arrested in Hattalli village of Chadchan taluk, Bagalkot district, for allegedly chaining a man in public over a pending loan of just Rs 20,000.

According to police sources, the victim, Chandasab Alauddin Mulla—a local driver—had borrowed Rs 20,000 from Kumaragouda Biradar after promising to work for him. However, Mulla neither reported for duty nor returned the borrowed money, which reportedly enraged the lender.

In a disturbing act of vigilantism, the accused Kumaragouda Biradar, along with an accomplice Srishaila Biradar, allegedly abducted Chandasab from Chadchana town on their Pulsar bike and brought him to Hattalli village. There, they chained his legs in front of Mallikarjuna Biradar’s shop, publicly humiliated him, and demanded repayment. He was released only in the evening, and no medical aid or police report was filed immediately.

The victim mustered courage and filed a complaint four to five days later at Chadchana police station. Acting on the complaint, local police arrested both accused and began interrogations. The incident has sparked outrage over the inhumane treatment meted out for a minor debt.
