Karwar, Jul 18: In a moving tale of loyalty and compassion, a dog that lost its owner during last year’s Shirur landslide has found an unexpected new home — with none other than Uttara Kannada district's superintendent of police (SP) M Narayan.
The canine, which was seen searching the landslide debris for its owner, now lives safely at the SP's official residence and has become a favourite among VIP guests.
It may be recalled, on July 16, 2024, a deadly landslide struck Shirur, claiming several lives. Among the victims was the owner of this loyal dog. In the days that followed, the animal remained at the disaster site, sniffing and scouring the area — desperately searching for its lost companion.

This heart-wrenching sight drew the attention of locals and animal lovers alike, many of whom tried contacting animal welfare organisations to find the dog a home. But despite appeals, no one came forward to adopt it.
Seeing the dog’s plight, SP M Narayan stepped in with a gesture that touched many: he adopted the orphaned dog and brought it to live at his government quarters. Since then, the dog has been given regular baths, nutritious food, and warm care — a second chance at life.
A star at the SP’s residence
Now a permanent fixture at the SP’s residence, the dog has become a favourite among visiting VIPs. Dignitaries regularly interact with the friendly canine, with many even posing for selfies.
According to SP Narayan, several prominent leaders who visited his home recently have taken selfies with the dog, including home minister Dr G Parameshwara, senior Congress leader R V Deshpande, local MLA Satish Sail, state minister Mankal Vaidya.
“I don’t know how long I will be posted here, but I will ensure the dog remains safe and cared for in this home,” SP Narayan stated, earning widespread appreciation for his empathy.
What began as a scene of sorrow has become a symbol of kindness and second chances. The dog, once orphaned and alone, is now a part of the police family — and a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful rescues come from the heart.
