Puttur, Jul 16: In a major step towards improving public transport connectivity, the first-ever non-stop express KSRTC bus service between Puttur and Mangaluru was officially launched on Monday. The service, named ‘Puttur Express’, marks a historic milestone for both the Puttur and Mangaluru KSRTC divisions.

The dream project of local MLA Ashok Rai has now become a reality, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters. MLA Rai himself flagged off the inaugural bus, marking the beginning of a service expected to revolutionize travel between the district and taluk headquarters.

As part of the initiative, seven specially designated buses have been deployed under the Puttur division, collectively making 60 trips per day between the two cities. The service will run from morning till dusk, ensuring frequent and reliable options for passengers.

Currently, express services between Puttur and Mangaluru's State Bank area are limited and intermixed with regular rural routes involving numerous halts. The new non-stop buses — running every 20 minutes — will significantly cut down travel time, bypassing all intermediate stops.

In addition to existing services from Madikeri and Mysuru depots, these new buses will operate exclusively between Puttur and Mangaluru (Bejai and State Bank terminals). Passengers can board within Puttur city limits up to Murada and within Mangaluru from State Bank to Padil.

The fare for the non-stop service has been fixed at Rs 71, matching the existing express service rates. Women commuters can travel free under the Shakti Yojana, making the service both affordable and inclusive.

For years, daily travelers from the Subrahmanya region relied on the Mangaluru-Subrahmanya passenger train, while Puttur commuters were burdened by frequent stops and inadequate bus options — especially during peak hours. With the rise in women travelers due to the Shakti scheme, male passengers often faced bus shortages.

With 60 additional trips introduced by the Puttur Express, such bottlenecks are expected to ease dramatically. Students and office-goers will now have faster and more comfortable options to reach their destinations.

Where earlier it took up to 90 minutes or more to cover the Puttur-Mangaluru stretch, the express service is expected to complete the journey in just one hour. KSRTC officials have assured that they will monitor the service closely, with some staff personally commuting to assess efficiency and passenger feedback.

The launch of Puttur Express is not just a transport upgrade — it is a symbol of regional progress, offering speed, comfort, and accessibility to thousands who traverse this route daily.
