New Delhi, Jul 16: Indian women’s hockey star Deepika etched her name into history by becoming the first-ever Indian player to win the prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award, an honour decided by global fan votes celebrating extraordinary skill in the FIH Hockey Pro League.

The 21-year-old forward clinched the award for her spectacular solo goal against world No. 1 Netherlands during the Bhubaneswar leg of the 2024–25 Pro League season. In a thrilling moment during the 35th minute, Deepika cut through the Dutch defence along the left flank, skilfully dribbled past a defender, and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper—igniting India’s comeback from a 0–2 deficit. The match ended in a 2–2 draw, with India winning in a shootout.

Reacting to the award, an emotional Deepika said, “Scoring that goal against a top team like the Netherlands was unforgettable. Winning this award makes it even more special. I’m grateful to my teammates, coaches, and everyone who supports me. This is not just my win—it’s for Indian hockey.”

The Poligras Magic Skill Award recognises the most skilful moments in the Pro League, with fans voting from across the globe. Deepika’s goal was selected over entries from Spain’s Patricia Alvarez and the Australian women’s team.

In the men’s category, Belgium’s Victor Wegnez claimed the award for his midfield brilliance leading to a goal against Spain.

Deepika’s victory marks a proud milestone for Indian hockey on the global stage, showcasing both her talent and the growing international impact of Indian women's hockey.
