Mumbai, Jul 15: Renowned actor, producer, and director Dheeraj Kumar, a respected name in Indian television and cinema, passed away on Tuesday at 11:40 a.m. in Mumbai. He was 79.

Kumar had been undergoing treatment for acute pneumonia at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri West, where he was placed on ventilator support in the ICU. His son, Ashutosh Kumar, was present by his side during his final moments. He reportedly succumbed to a cardiac arrest.

According to hospital sources, it will take a few hours to complete the necessary formalities before his body is taken home. His cremation is expected to take place tomorrow, allowing time for close relatives to arrive from Punjab.

In an official statement, his family expressed their grief:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dheeraj Kumar, a renowned actor, producer, and director. He left us due to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Hospital. The entertainment industry has lost a committed and passionate artist. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and condolences. May his soul rest in peace.”

A Stalwart of the Entertainment Industry

Dheeraj Kumar’s journey in showbiz began in 1965 when he was selected as a finalist in a national talent competition—an event that also featured industry legends like Subhash Ghai and Rajesh Khanna, the latter emerging as the winner.

Between 1970 and 1984, Kumar featured in 21 Punjabi films, gaining popularity across regional cinema. His memorable appearances include roles in films like “Heera Panna”, “Raaton Ka Raja”, and the classic “Swami”, where the song “Ka Karoon Sajani, Aaye Na Balam” was picturized on him.

He later transitioned into production and founded Creative Eye Ltd., a media company where he served as Chairman and Managing Director. Under his banner, he produced several acclaimed television shows and left a significant mark on Indian households through mythological and family-oriented programming.

A Man of Faith and Humility

Kumar remained spiritually inclined throughout his life. Just recently, he attended the inauguration of the ISKCON temple in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. In a heartfelt address, he had lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting Sanatan Dharma.

“While they called me a VVIP here, I believe the true VVIP is God,” he remarked during the event. “PM Modi’s words about the ISKCON temple were uplifting. I felt at peace being part of something so spiritually meaningful.”

Dheeraj Kumar’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian entertainment—a multifaceted personality who excelled in front of the camera and behind it. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion to craft, culture, and community.

Rest in peace, Dheeraj Kumar.
