Bengaluru, Jul 12: In a shocking and deeply disturbing incident, popular Kannada television actress and anchor Shruthi (real name Manjula C) was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her husband Amaresh H S at their residence in Hanumanthanagar, just three days after she had returned to live with him along with her two daughters.

The brutal attack took place on July 4, and the Bengaluru police have since arrested Amaresh based on a complaint filed by Shruthi from her hospital bed. According to police sources, the accused used pepper spray before launching a violent knife attack on the actress, leaving her grievously injured.

Shruthi, 38, well-known for her role in the Kannada serial Amruthadhare and her presence as an anchor on several television shows, had reportedly been living apart from her husband for several months due to ongoing matrimonial issues and domestic violence.

As per the First Information Report (FIR), Shruthi and Amaresh had been married for 20 years, but cracks began to appear around five years into their marriage, largely due to Amaresh’s violent and controlling behaviour. Matters escalated earlier this year, and in April, Shruthi sought refuge at her brother’s home after filing a police complaint against Amaresh.

While living separately, Amaresh allegedly began pressuring Shruthi over financial matters, repeatedly demanding money for lease payments and jewellery, and even issued death threats, the FIR stated.

Shockingly, just days before the incident, Amaresh convinced Shruthi’s brother to allow her to return to his home, promising to reform himself and care for her and the children. Believing his assurances, Shruthi returned to live with him on July 1.

On the day of the attack, Shruthi's children had left for college and Amaresh had initially stepped out, only to return around midday. As soon as she opened the door, he allegedly sprayed pepper in her eyes and repeatedly stabbed her, said police.

Shruthi tried to escape and call for help, and it was neighbours who heard her screams and rushed to rescue her. She was immediately taken to Victoria Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

The accused has been booked under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Amaresh, who was arrested last week, has since moved a sessions court for bail, and the court is expected to deliver its order on July 16.

The case has sparked outrage across social media and the entertainment industry, with fans and fellow artistes expressing solidarity with Shruthi and demanding stringent action against her attacker.

Authorities have assured that the investigation is being carried out with utmost seriousness, and more details will emerge as the case progresses.
