Dharamshala, Jul 6: The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama, celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, amid week-long festivities that drew global followers, Indian ministers, and Hollywood actor Richard Gere.
Marking the milestone, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate reiterated his commitment to reincarnate as the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, dismissing concerns over the future of his spiritual lineage. He affirmed that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, his non-profit institution, alone holds the authority to recognise his successor.

In his address, the Dalai Lama also expressed hope of living beyond 130 years. “There’s still much to do,” he said with a smile, drawing cheers from his followers.
The celebrations included vibrant cultural performances and tributes from long-time followers. Indian federal ministers and US officials were among those who attended the event, underscoring the global support for the Tibetan cause.
The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule, has lived in exile in India since then, advocating a peaceful “Middle Way” for autonomy and religious freedom in Tibet.
China, however, continues to label him a separatist and insists that his reincarnation must be approved by Beijing. The United States has condemned China’s stance, urging it to end interference in the succession process.
As the 14th Dalai Lama enters his tenth decade, his enduring influence and message of compassion, peace, and resilience continue to inspire millions around the world.
