Washington, Jul 3: As America gears up for Independence Day celebrations, federal agencies have raised security concerns over possible lone-wolf attacks and unauthorised drone activity. In a joint bulletin reviewed by CNN, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warned that small extremist groups or individuals motivated by racial, political, or religious grievances pose the most likely threat—particularly to high-profile events like the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks in New York City.
While officials have found no specific or credible threats so far, they emphasized that large gatherings with media coverage are “attractive targets” for those seeking mass casualties or attention. The alert also referenced recent violent incidents, including the New Year’s Day vehicle-ramming in New Orleans and firebombing in Boulder, Colorado, as reasons for increased vigilance.
The bulletin noted that global conflicts, especially Israel’s war on Gaza, have already inspired attacks in the US, such as the May 21 killing of Israeli embassy staffers in Washington DC. Concerns have also grown following US military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, with the DHS warning of possible cyber retaliation by Iranian-linked hackers.
Officials are closely monitoring unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), noting that while there’s no current threat involving drones at the Macy’s fireworks, unauthorised drone activity could still pose public safety risks.
Authorities across the country have increased security measures as Americans prepare to mark July 4 amid global tensions and domestic unrest.
