Barmer, Jul 2: In a heart-wrenching incident from Rajasthan's Barmer district, four members of a family — a couple and their two young sons — allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a water tank near their home, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Undu village under Sheo Police Station limits on Tuesday evening. The deceased have been identified as Shivlal (35), his wife Kavita (32), and their two sons aged eight and six. Their bodies were recovered from the tank outside their house in Brahmano Ki Dhani.

According to preliminary investigations, Shivlal allegedly locked the house before jumping into the tank along with his wife and children. The matter came to light after Shivlal’s younger brother failed to reach him on the phone and alerted a neighbour, who then informed the police.

Sheo DSP Manaram Garg said, “The bodies were discovered in the tank on Tuesday evening. As the in-laws could not arrive that night, the retrieval was carried out in their presence on Wednesday morning.” The bodies were sent to the Bhiyad CHC mortuary for post-mortem.

Gopilal, the maternal uncle of Kavita, alleged that Shivlal had been facing continuous harassment from his brother and mother over his desire to build a separate house under the PM Awas Yojana scheme. “He had even written a suicide note on June 29, but did not take any action immediately. On Tuesday, with his mother away in Barmer and father engaged in religious work, Shivlal and Kavita switched off their phones and ended their lives,” he said.

Police have recorded statements from both sides of the family. Investigators said the case is being examined under IPC sections related to abetment of suicide, and that the alleged suicide note and details of the family dispute are crucial to the ongoing probe.
