Mangaluru, Jun 30: Prison Ministry India, Mangalore Unit, organized a half-day recollection for its members on June 29 at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, Mangaluru.
The recollection was led by Fr Jocy Siddakatte, OCD, Carmelite priest and former editor of Naman Ballok Jesu monthly magazine. In his reflection, Fr Jocy emphasized the need to be “born again,” which calls for dying to sinful and selfish attitudes and tendencies. Reflecting on the ministry itself, he stated that prison ministry is a special vocation meant for a few and not for everyone. It requires more than just financial support - it demands a generous heart willing to sacrifice time and energy. “To visit prisons, listen to the inmates’ stories, reach out to their families, and work for their welfare is a noble and challenging call,” he said. He encouraged members to break the chains of ego, misunderstandings, and pride in order to experience true Christian freedom.

Following the reflection, Fr Jocy led the members in a time of Eucharistic Adoration.
The Holy Mass was presided over by Fr Stifan Perera, OCD, the newly appointed chaplain of the PMI Mangalore unit. In his homily, given on the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, he reflected on the lives of these two great pillars of the Church - Peter, a man of the "heart," and Paul, a man of the "head." Despite their differences, they came together to become men of the "Spirit" and of "Christ." He invited the members to follow their example by becoming people of Christ - united in mind and heart.
The day began with a welcome address by Donald Coutinho, Coordinator of the PMI Mangalore Unit. He extended a warm welcome to Fr Stifan Perera, OCD, the newly appointed spiritual director, Fr Jocy Siddakatte, OCD, the resource person, and all the members of the Unit.
Lawrence Crasta, assistant coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing special gratitude to Felix Pinto for sponsoring the morning breakfast and to Linet Castelino, secretary of the unit, for sponsoring the midday lunch.
